Setting out on an oily journey…

A few months ago, one of my friends signed up as distributors with Young Living. I had heard a little bit about essential oils, but really didn’t know much… and honestly, as a nurse and a science nerd, I really was skeptical.

My friend kept sharing some of her experiences with me, and we had some great conversations. Over time, I became curious enough to purchase a starter kit. I was sick about every two to three months with the “virus du jour” and I really had become motivated to find ways to naturally support my body and stay well!

The first true test has been over the last month or so- my son has been sick with a virus that turned in to a sinus infection, and during that time I’ve made a visit to urgent care, and two visits to the pediatrician. After every visit, I’ve been sure I was going to come down with something… but I kept using my immunity blend of oils, drinking lots of water and getting plenty of rest.

I’ve had intermittent congestion, and a sore throat here and there… but, THAT IS IT. I’ve kept functioning!

Without further ado, here’s my recipe for a fantastic blend of oils to support your “winter wellness”… I can’t share this without a big shout out to the awesome team I’ve come to know through Young Living – this blend is one that was shared with our group and I’m forever thankful!

10 drops Thieves, 10 drops Lemon, 5 drops Copiaba, 5 drops Oregano. Add to a roller bottle, top with carrier oil. Apply to feet morning and night.

I buy my roller bottles and carrier oil off Amazon. You can click the links to see the ones I use (not an affiliate link – I just want to share what works for me!

This blend also works great in your diffuser… in smaller amounts. I usually do 3 drops Thieves, 3 drops Lemon, 1 drop Copiaba and 1 drop Oregano. I find the Oregano especially potent – so I don’t like to diffuse it too strongly. This blend is perfect and is another way to receive the same benefits!

Questions? Comment below and I’ll be happy to answer! Thanks for letting me share my first oily adventure with you!

Baby, let’s go there!

I wanted to talk a little bit about the practical aspects of taking your family of four to Hawaii for two weeks. For some people, perhaps the financial aspects of such a vacation do not present a big worry… However, for most people, there’s a fair bit of planning and saving that accompany such a big trip. Also, ‘Baby, let’s go there!’ is the title of a great song by The Brothers Osbourne.  Check it out!  In no particular order, here’s a list of what made it work for us. The hashtags are because I flatter myself a comedian, and because the kids in my daughters class have been yelling “hashtag” followed by crazy stuff for the last year.  I thought it would be funny to treat practical concepts, like airfare, with the same #importance.

#saveyournickels – if you are looking for a great way to save money for your trip – check out Smarty Pig. You create a savings account (FDIC insured, of course) and give it a meaningful name like, Hawaii… Link your bank account and download the smartphone app.  Now, it is easy as pie to transfer money in for your vacation! You can set up recurring transfers, or make them on the fly.  So, the next time you overcome temptation and skip buying your caramel macchiato, throw an extra $5 to the pig and have one in Hawaii!

#yougottashoparound – Shop, shop, shop for airfare, but when you think a price is good, don’t wait.  We had originally planned on flying Hawaiian airlines over here, because we really like the experience. (Call us corny, but it kind of makes you feel like you’re in Hawaii that much sooner.) Also, most of the time, they are the most affordable of the major airlines.  At least, they were when we were comparing.  Imagine our surprise when we finally went to book our trip, and found the fares had increased by at least 200.00 per person. We waited too long. I think we should have booked about a month earlier, which would have been about 6 months before our flight. I know there are people who say you should wait until 45 days before the trip, or whatever magic number, but I kept checking airfares after we booked. They never went down. So, I say book when it looks good and assume prices will go up!

#helpsomebody! – If you are traveling with another family, pool your resources. We resolved the airfare situation because my BIL had access to a travel concierge thru his credit card company.  Look at resources through your auto club, credit union, Costco membership, credit card company, your employer, (mine belongs to several discount services that offer discounts to employees, such as http://www.ticketsatwork.com). You would be surprised the ways you can save money just by checking these things out. If you find yourself the beneficiary of a kindness due to a resource from a family member, do what you can to reciprocate or say thank you in some way.

#wheelsforcruisin’  Bookmark this website now – Discount Hawaii Car Rental. I do not know how they do it – but they will search all of the major car rental companies, and offer you rates that are much lower than anything you can find anywhere else.  You do not have to even leave a credit card to hold your reservation, and you can cancel without penalty. We saved about 600.00 on the rental of a Jeep Wrangler for the week.  Don’t let the listing of companies as ‘A’ ‘B’ etc put you off – they are all national companies and you can find out who they are with a quick Google search. You’ll also get the company name when you receive your confirmation. This is 100% legit and a true savings.  Also, in my humble opinion, the Jeep was ubiquitous, but perfect for our family vacation.  There are some rough roads in Hawaii!

Affordable, comfortable and ubiquitous!

#aplacetolayyourheadandeatawaffle – When it comes to lodging, I have one piece of advice if you are looking to do this reasonably.  Do not stay in a hotel. Rent a place with a kitchen! We rented an ocean front condo for a very reasonable rate through VRBO, and have saved a ton of money by cooking in the condo. Try to find one with good BBQ facilities, because it’s really pleasant to not have to heat up your condo if it’s hot.

#findsomegrindz – Speaking of food, there is pretty much one way to do this affordably, and it’s name is Costco. If you don’t have a membership, get one. It will pay for itself on the trip, no lie. Make a run, stock up (don’t forget lots of bottled water!) and away you go.  Treat yourself to a 1.50 hot dog and soda while you are there!

#readallaboutit – Finally, if you are looking for a guidebook that is truly worth your cash, look no further than the book below. Yes, I’ll get a little money if you buy the book thru this link, but I bought my first copy of this book on my honeymoon 14 years ago, and it was the first thing we ordered when we began planning to go back. It’s honest, comprehensive, and at times, pretty funny. It’s an invaluable tool in making sure your trip is everything you want it to be. They have a smartphone app too (you have to buy it separately) but it’s well worth it for figuring out where you want to get lunch on the fly!

Hawaii The Big Island Revealed: The Ultimate Guidebook

I think that’s about covered what it takes to get here. Later, I’ll share more highlights of our trip and the things I would probably have changed a bit.  Although, it’s hard to have regrets about much when you’ve been waking up to this view for the last 14 days! Aloha and Mahalo for reading!   PS. If you are following this and I blew up your inbox with emails saying the post has been updated, then please accept my sincerest apology – getting the links right has proven only slightly more difficult than tightrope walking.

Kona, days 1 & 2

I had grand intentions of blogging a lot on this vacation.

That hasn’t happened.

Here’s the thing… I don’t feel bad about it. Because instead of writing, I’ve been living which always makes for more interesting stories later. We’ve enjoyed so many things this trip, and it isn’t even close to being over!

The trip to Kona was surprisingly l-o-n-g. Although we only had to change planes one time, there was a layover, and we ended up being awake for nearly 24 hours by the time we arrived. As we landed, we felt the warm tropical air descend upon us and we knew that finally, we were here!!!

We started our first day in Kona with breakfast at one of our favorite restaurants, Bubba Gump’s. Sadly, they changed their breakfast menu and don’t have the same rum French toast I enjoyed here on our honeymoon but I am willing to let that go because a) the breakfast was still pretty dang good, and b) they make a damn fine Bloody Mary, which I enjoyed immensely. The kids shared a breakfast dish with mahi mahi in it… Never let it be said that I am raising picky eaters! They loved it!  After breakfast, we walked around town a bit. Later, my SIL and I went to Costco for groceries, while the guys and the kids played in the pool. There is really no way to vacation affordably without cooking facilities and a trip to Costco, and I am thankful for both. It rocks!

Hey! One of those is mine!!!

Day 2: We visited one of our favorite beaches, which is Hapuna.  It’s a little bit of a drive from where we are staying, but totally  worth it.  They improved it a lot since B and I went there for our honeymoon 14 years ago. There are pavilions now, a lifeguard stand and a snack shack. I didn’t go to the snack shack, but we almost did when we discovered that most of the frozen water bottles we grabbed had salt in them, left by the previous condo renters in the hopes of making more usable ice packs.  Live and learn!

The kids loved Hapuna though. It was so fun to watch the smiles on their faces as they headed towards the water. It reminded me of the times I spent on the beaches as a kid, the first time this Oregon girl realized that it was possible to be in ocean water that didn’t require survival suits.  They spent a lot of time just playing in the waves, but also did some snorkeling and boogie boarding.  Alex snorkeled and boogie boarded at the same time, because he is awesome like that…. Lily took to the water like a proverbial fish, and couldn’t stop smiling. Nothing makes me happier than seeing my kids have such a great time!

We are off to an amazing start here. My goals for this trip are simple: I just want to slow down. To be in the moment, free from anxiety and stress. Truly present for each memory with the people I love most… More to come later!

Wow! This water is so warm!

The aquatic multi-tasker!

The Burgers of Magnificent Wonder, or… Turkey, Turkey, Turkey!

As time goes by, I’m thinking more about how I want to use this blog.  The amount of work, and pressure involved in trying to make it ultra-successful seems like a lot of pressure for me right now, when added to the list of all of my other responsibilities.

However,  when considered in the context of being used as a tool for things I want to remember, then, this blog becomes more fun, more useful, and less pressure.

Take tonight for example, we made some amazing turkey burgers. They were aided, by the fact that The Girl Wonder made some amazing homemade burger buns that we used also.

But still, we wanted to remember how we made them. I didn’t get all fancy and take pictures before hand, because I wasn’t sure they would be all that great. So we will have to deal with a picture of the finished products. I’ll get more savvy if I do this more, and try take more pictures.

Here’s how we did it:

1) Take a couple of pounds of ground turkey. We didn’t use ground turkey breast – just the regular Foster Farms ground turkey.

2) Add a good drizzle of olive oil – as Rachel Ray would say, a “couple turns” of the bowl.

3) Add some feta – as much as looks good. We probably threw in about a cup to a cup and a quarter.

4) Add a healthy sprinkle of Johnny’s Seasoning Salt, or whatever your preferred brand is.  We probably threw in a good 2 tablespoons.

Cook them on the BBQ.

Eat up!

120 days and counting

120 days…
There are 120 days that remain until we board a plane for Hawaii; and this, my friends, is when the hysteria in the my house starts to build.

We believe, you see, that part of the fun is in the preparations. Because trips are over so quickly, and imagining all of the scenarios, needs, and adventures you’ll have over the course of the trip is all part of our fun.

Towards that end, I have a new iPad air for syncing my photos. I will carry my newly ordered Shootsac to keep my dslr handy for lots of photos. We are very excited about making another photo book like we did last year. I wonder what the total photo count for this trip will be?

I’d like to take Captain America again – and take more photos with him. It just always seems to fall apart though because it’s actually kind of time consuming to set up those shots, and usually everyone else is ready to move on.

I’m starting to think about a preliminary packing list for me and the kids. I think it is very helpful to do this actually, because the more I think about it and write down thoughts as they come to me, the fewer packing mistakes I make… At least, that’s what I tell myself!

Note – I wrote this a while ago, but just found it here, unpublished.  So, better late than never!

Well, THAT was awkward

Wow. One post in July. That’s all that’s here. I wish that I could say that’s unusual for me, but that’s the thing about life… you make plans, God laughs, and you finally one day, accept that you are just along for the ride.

That being recognized, it’s still a pretty good ride. A lot has happened since I wrote that post in July. We went on an awesome vacation to Montana, Wyoming, S. Dakota, and N. Dakota. Got to see some family, and just had a great time. I took over 3000 pictures. Maybe I’ll put some of ’em up here too.

Now it’s March. We’ve slogged through another winter, and are counting the days until our next vacation. I remember being a kid, and my mom telling me to enjoy the moment because life went by too quickly. That it does. But, I can’t say life would be much fun either without things to look forward to.

I really, really love the idea of blogging. I love getting my ideas out and having an outlet for my creativity. I’m gonna try to keep this going. Not even sure if anyone reads it. I don’t really care either way right now, I guess. It’s fun to do, and for right now, that’s enough.

But if you are reading it, YAY!  🙂

Our special summer guest…

I thought I would kick of my blog with some fun. I’ve tried blogs in the past, with the focus being on a certain hobby or aspect of my life, but the bottom line is…. Don’t fence me in, man!

I don’t know exactly where this blog will go. I remember watching an NCIS episode where McGee described the wonderful Abby’s mind as “a pinball machine”.

That’s pretty much me. Hang on, and have fun, because whether I am traveling, knitting, taking pictures, going to work or cleaning my house, that’s what I plan to do!

On that note, we have a special guest, as you will see below. Stay tuned for his amazing adventures!
